FEATURES
About the treatment
What is permanent makeup removal?
Permanent makeup places pigment in the skin to keep the shape and colour of features such as the eyebrows for a long time. It fades over time, but may not disappear completely, or its colour may change. In laser removal of permanent makeup, a laser that reacts with the pigment breaks it into fine particles and gradually lightens it. At OKACHI CLINIC we use the PicoWay picosecond laser. As well as complete removal, we can discuss removing one brow or just part of one.

Not only removal — also for a change of design
Permanent makeup removal is not always about complete removal. We also offer partial removal — for example, “I want to remove just the tails to change the shape”, “I want to lighten my old brows before having new permanent makeup” or “I want to remove only the parts that stick out, to change the thickness”. Please tell us at the consultation how much you would like your current permanent makeup lightened.

What we especially want you to know
The colour may change as a result of laser treatment. Permanent makeup uses a variety of pigments. When the laser is applied, some pigments may respond first, or a shade different from before may become noticeable, temporarily or lastingly. Depending on the pigment’s ingredients, it may also turn black or grey (darken) when treated with a laser. For this reason, we check the current colour at the consultation before treatment and, where necessary, start with a test patch in an inconspicuous area.
About the device
- Device
- PicoWay, made by Syneron Candela
- Type
- Picosecond laser (picosecond KTP / Nd:YAG laser)
- Pulse duration
- The laser fires in picoseconds (trillionths of a second) — shorter than the nanoseconds (billionths of a second) of the conventional Q-switched lasers traditionally used for tattoo treatment. Because each pulse is so short, less heat is produced; the treatment aims to raise peak power while keeping pain and strain on the skin down.
- Wavelengths
- It has three wavelengths — 532 nm, 730 nm and 1064 nm — which are used according to the colour and depth of the pigment.
- Approval
- Japanese medical device approval number 23000BZX00270000. The device is approved in Japan and by the U.S. FDA for the treatment of deep and superficial pigmented lesions of the skin and for tattoo removal.

Side effects and risks
The main effects are redness, swelling, scabbing and temporary darkening of the skin. Depending on the pigment, it may turn black when treated, in which case further treatment will be needed. Loss of pigment, scarring, and eyebrow hairs or eyelashes turning white or growing less may also occur. The pigment may not disappear completely even after repeated sessions.
